About Civil Justice
Civil Justice in British Columbia
The laws of civil justice are vitally important to society. As a process, civil justice enables people to recover from damages caused by others – be it by other citizens, companies or institutions. Damages can arise due to a breach of duty or some other form of negligence that makes a party, or parties, responsible for harm caused to innocent people. All of this relates to tort law, whereby a civil lawsuit can be brought forward as a means of seeking justice and compensation for financial damages and other personal injuries suffered as a result of wrongful acts (non-criminal actions or inactions that cause harm to innocent individuals).
An effective system of civil justice aims to:
- Enable citizens to seek fair compensation for their injuries
- Protect innocent people by ensuring their personal legal rights are upheld
- Guarantee access to the courts for all of society’s citizens
- Preserve the legal principles of accountability and equality
- Provide deterrents to negligent behaviour and thereby promote a safer society
